Jasper van Putten is a Dutch artist and art historian who has lived in the United States and currently resides in Switzerland. He explores his urban environment and landscapes in watercolors, drawings, and prints, as well as mixed-media works that combine these techniques on paper. While many of his works are interpretations of our spatial surroundings, the COVID-19 crisis of 2019–2020 and, more recently, the genocide in Palestine have gradually transformed the content of his art to address political and social themes.

Lockdown Leporello

Lockdown Leporello

Lockdown Leporello is a 20-page hand-bound leporello (accordion-style book) about a boy and a girl communicating with each other through origami animals through their windows during the COVID lockdown. Edition 50.

Beautifully bound and illustrated. As an epidemiologist, and fellow artist, the pandemic has overtaken every waking (and resting) hour of my life. Today is Day 332 for me. In a time when we can’t see friends and family as much as we used to, and struggle to find the right ways to feel connected, and stay connected, nourish our minds and lift our spirits, there is art – as creativity can ease our stress and help us process the heaviness that we are all collectively dealing with. Jasper captures in beautiful detail, the very essence and weight of how self isolation, for approaching a year, has been experienced from his perspective – and it is BEAUTIFUL, and raw, and real. Thank you for sharing your talent and gift with the world. #supportartists

Covid's Long Shadow

COVID's Long Shadow

COVID’s Long Shadow is a 20-page hand-bound leporello comic about the horrific reality of long COVID. The magical realist story tells of a cartoonist who is bored during the lockdown but is jolted into the reality of the situation by a group of cats who, through their shadows at night, tell of long COVID patients. Edition 50.

Octossey

Octossey is a fantastical, tentacal story about a young boy who befriends an octopus to find a little girl in the eye of a goldfish. Original watercolors of Octossey were exhibited at the Comic Art Show at the 2018 MICE (Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo). Octossey is available on Etsy.

Time Commute

The comic, Time Commute: A Too Brief History of the Making of the First American Subway, is a short story about the creation of the Boston subway in the 19th century. The comic features drawings of present-day Bostonians that I made during my daily commute on the T (the subway), as well as watercolors based on 19th-century photographs. I self-published the comic in 2017, and a version of it will be published in the near future in the Boston Comics Roundtable’s Greater Boston History Comics Anthology.

Exhibitions

Current Exhibition: Palästina lädt zur Kunst ein (Gruppenausstellung)

From July 20th to 25th, I will be exhibiting my Palestine-themed artworks in the exhibition “Palestine invites you to Art at the Kulturbauernhof Wanner 433,” a wonderfully idyllic space full of art.

Art for Gaza

Art for Gaza is a group of artists living in and around Basel. Deeply dismayed by the art world’s silence on the genocide in Gaza, we organize an annual group exhibition featuring art about Palestine, by both Palestinian and non-Palestinian artists. The photos are from our first exhibition, GENOCIDE COMES AS NO SURPRISE, in June 2025.
